The Dutch state pension (AOW) age for 2032 has not been set yet and is expected to be announced in early November 2026. By law it must be fixed five years in advance, based on the life expectancy forecast that CBS publishes each autumn. For 2031 it is 67 years and three months, the same as for 2028 to 2030.
Whether the age goes up in 2032 depends on a formula in the law, not on a political decision. This article explains how that formula works, what the cabinet decided in 2026 about linking the AOW age to life expectancy, and how to plan when your own AOW date is not yet fixed.
The AOW age up to 2031
According to the Rijksoverheid, the AOW age is 67 in 2025, 2026 and 2027, and 67 years and three months from 2028 to 2031. The age for 2031 was set on 7 November 2025 and did not change compared with 2030. Once set, an AOW age cannot be changed, so these years are certain.
If you were born after 30 September 1964, your AOW age is not yet known, because you reach 67 and three months in 2032 or later. Our article on the AOW age table to 2031 shows which age applies to which date of birth.
How the AOW age for 2032 is calculated
The Algemene Ouderdomswet contains a formula that compares expected life expectancy at 65 with a fixed reference value. Since the pension agreement of 2019, only two thirds of any increase in life expectancy counts, which amounts to eight months of later AOW for every extra year of life expectancy. If the outcome is below a quarter of a year, the age stays the same, and if it is a quarter or more, the age rises by exactly three months, never more.
For 2031, CBS expected 65-year-olds to live another 21.02 years, which was not enough for an increase. Applied to 2032, the formula means the AOW age only rises to 67 years and six months if CBS forecasts a life expectancy at 65 of at least 21.39 years for 2032. CBS publishes that forecast in early November, and the government announces the AOW age at the same time.
What changed in 2026
The coalition agreement contained a plan to link the AOW age one-to-one to life expectancy again from 2033, so that every extra year of life would mean a full year of later AOW. In May 2026 the cabinet dropped that plan, and on Prinsjesdag it confirmed this in the budget. The AOW age for 2032 was never affected, and the existing two-thirds rule will also continue to apply after that.
Planning when your AOW date is not fixed
If your AOW age is not yet known, it is prudent to plan with a slightly later date than the current 67 years and three months. A difference of three months matters most if you want to stop working before your AOW age, because every extra month has to be covered from your own savings.
